Spread the love

Have you ever watched a movie at the Utah International Film Festival and thought, “I want to make one of those!”?

You don’t need a fancy, expensive camera or huge computer to make a movie. You already have a whole movie studio right in your hand: a smartphone! Whether you want to film a backyard adventure, a funny skit with your dog, or a Lego battle, these apps make it super easy to edit your very first movie.

Here are four apps I recommend:

iMovie (Best for iPhone and iPad)

If you have an iPhone or iPad, iMovie is the perfect place to start. It is super easy to use. You just drag and drop your video clips where you want them.

It comes with pre-made “trailers.” You just drop your videos into their special templates, and it automatically adds epic Hollywood music and big movie titles to make your video look like a real movie preview!

Stop Motion Studio (Best for Toy Animations)

Do you love Legos, clay, or action figures? Stop motion is a type of movie where you take a picture of a toy, move it just a tiny bit, and take another picture. When you play the pictures fast, the toy comes to life!

Stop Motion Studio makes this super easy. It shows a faint shadow of your last picture so you know exactly how far to move your toy for the next shot.

InShot (Best for Fun Stickers and Music)

InShot is a really fun app that works on both iPhones and Androids. It is great if you want to make short, funny videos to share with your friends and family.

It has tons of fun features! You can add cool text, stickers, filters, and your own voiceovers. You can also speed up your video to look like a chipmunk or slow it down for a dramatic, slow-motion effect.

4. CapCut (Best for Cool Effects)

CapCut is one of the most popular video apps in the world right now. It has a ton of effects that can make your videos look professional.

It has smart tools that can do tricks, like removing the background behind you so you can pretend you are floating in space!

Filmmaker Pro-Tip: The most important part of any movie isn’t the app you use—it’s the story you tell. Grab some paper, draw out your ideas first (this is called a storyboard), and then start filming! Maybe one day we will be showing your movie at the festival!
