Turnabout
"It was an ending we all wish for, but rarely get."
Turnabout was not what I had expected based purely on the title alone. However, once the film started, it was not even a minute in before I knew the plot of the movie. This is unfortunate if you are trying to keep an audience on the edge of their seat the entire time, but rest assured, the end is not what one expects, and is a “pleasant surprise.”
The main concept is that a new girl at the office is working overtime late at night only to be asked to go out for an informal drink with her boss and fellow employees (fellow employees do not show up). The boss then gets the new employee drunk to the point she cannot drive home and takes her to his place to show her art that they had discussed while drinking. He then fixes her a concoction of his own design (with an added kick) which of course makes her pass out and he then takes advantage of her in this state (rape).
She wakes up in his apartment seemingly knowing fully well what happened quicker than I would have liked to see played out personally, and uses language that, while understandable, may not have been necessary to get the affect and mood across.
She then goes into hiding for three days and is confronted by her friend whom we met at the beginning of the film who convinces her she needs to report the incident. The victim then meets with the boss’s “friend” who is an attorney and who of course tries to convince her to back down from filing a case against her boss. He even records her agreeing to accept money to make it all go away which is a crime, he does slip her ten grand at the end of that transaction. She once again feels defeat as she explains what happens to the supporting actress.
Now this is where it gets interesting, the supporting actress then suggests that the victim use the money to hire “a guy she knows.” We expect from here that they are going to hire a hit man, and that is expected right up to the last minute or so of the film, but that is not what happens. To avoid giving the end away I will leave you to your imagination and repeat the title “Turnabout.”
Overall this is a film I would recommend. The biggest downside to the film was the filming or white balance was off throughout so much of the film that if one were to come across it on YouTube for instance, they might move on relatively fast due to this alone. There were only a few other small things I would have tweaked throughout the film; some unnecessary cursing (mood of the film and actress emotions could have sufficed), mood building music unnecessary at certain points as well, and some different lines or common sense during the boss’s apartment scene.
I can definitely say, “it was an ending we all wish for, but rarely get.”
