Day Zero: Rebel Yell
We all have different perceptions of the future. One might think of a super-scientific futuristic world with all the flying cars, holographic technologies, and artificial intelligence taking over, or probably an invasion of creatures from outer space, but realistically speaking, with all the devastation going left and right, along with the rise of epidemics and strains of drug-resistant viruses from different parts of the world, both natural cause and man-made, puts the notion of an apocalyptic wipeout at the top of the list of most human beings, including myself, hopefully not real soon. I don’t usually think of this kind of stuff it scares the hell out of me. I even try to avoid watching movies and series with this kind of theme. But something happened today that changed my view about this genre for the better. I had the opportunity to review a series that is overflowing with goodness in depicting what awaits humanity of a post-apocalyptic world. It is called “Day Zero” by the multi-talented director Cal Nguyen.
“Day Zero” is incredibly amazing, it surprised me a lot. Our director, Cal Nguyen brought me fast forward to the future sometime after a wipe out in the year 2119. I got the chance to review episode six of its third season called “Rebel Yell” It made me regret missing out on its first two seasons. I was impressed with the flow of the story that I decided to watch the series from the very beginning. Director Cal Nguyen who is also the writer of the whole series got me craving for more, it’s addictive. He simply made a post-apocalyptic reality seem exciting in my eyes and I love it. I also like the plot cooking in this episode, and the direction I am hoping it might take for the coming episodes. It is juicy folks from deception, treachery, supernatural, all the qualities of an amazing story ahead. I can’t wait for more.
The experience wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the excellence of its cinematic quality. And yes they were able to distinctively deliver it too. The cinematography was perfect, so as the production design and costumes. And of course, I wouldn’t miss out on the brilliant performance of the cast. High props to Eric McGraw, Travis Victor Webb, Carter Blanc, Derek Boone, and Jamie Lynn Bolton for making this awesome series extra-amazing.
Lastly, before I end this review I like to share something significant that I discovered from this series, particularly the episode “Rebel Yell” that I don’t quite see in series like this or most movies with the same themes. This series has a certain level of spiritually that I think it’s director Cal Nguyen is trying to channel to the audience. It brought me to a realization that in time we experience a scenario like this or even something close to an apocalyptic set-up even if it’s not yet the end of the world our faith will always guide us no matter what religion we serve and help one another despite differences. I’m not sure if that includes to the bottom line of the series but that is one of the factors that made an effect on me. Overall, it was an incredibly good series, I had an exciting experience watching particularly the Rebel Yell episode that got me hooked on this whole thing. Cheers to the marvelous work of Cal Nguyen, his amazing cast and the whole team of Day Zero the series.
