Glitches
Life is a journey, with goals set, experience learned, and memories to keep. Our timeline marked with achievements, high and lows of life, and the feelings and emotions that define our condition. And in this journey, there is no going back, all we can do is move forward with every life choices and consequences of our actions. We often ask ourselves what keeps us moving, what fuels us driving to our chosen path, and is it worth all of the sacrifices we make along the way? Well, I wouldn’t want you folks to worry about that for now, but instead, I am going to introduce to you all Kevin and Lisa from this nail-biting and mind-boggling short drama thriller “Glitches” by Annie Chen.
Director Annie Chen flew me to Taiwan in this short film. The production is set in an airport where we met our two lead characters Kevin (Li Cheng-Ta) and Lisa (Yuan Chun-Yueh), two strangers waiting to board their flight to Los Angeles. It was a usual busy airport, people trying to get on with their own business while waiting to board their flight, which included Kevin as he was trying to patch some business over the phone. But the moment he held the phone down, a stranger approached him, and this mystery lady upfront confesses to him a crime she committed. Kevin was surprised and baffled and decided to move away from her. But Kevin, a lawyer who was contemplating problems of his own, can’t believe that this is happening. Is this woman playing a trick on him, or is she just crazy? Should he call the police or turn her into security? While he was processing the situation, she again sat beside him and restated the wrong she had done and is probably running away from it. But there was a part of him that let her stay and listened to her. And it became the start of a conversation that he never thought would affect his perception as a human and as a lawyer. Could it be that he understands why she did it, or at some point in his life, he is also like this strange lady, Lisa, a person driven by her aspirations who along the way lost everything and can not find a purpose? I’m sorry folks, but I’ll leave it right there for now for you to unravel once this film sets out to its screenings.
What I admire about this film is the way it was able to exemplify a drama thriller between two-person who were simply sitting and talking. I also love how director Annie Chen was able to fill the scene with dramatic suspense energy as the two lead characters are exchanging their piece. A huge shout-out too for Li Cheng-Ta and Yuan Chun-Yueh for their outstanding performance. They showed flawless acting skills with depth in their delivery and on point emotions. Lastly, I’d like to highlight that our director Ms. Annie Chen is a first-time filmmaker, but with the caliber she presented in making this film showed that she can compete with pro filmmakers. Amazing work on this drama thriller, keep it up!
