John D Farmer – See You Next Tuesday
We had the opportunity to interview John D, Farmer about his film See You Next Tuesday. See You Next Tuesday is an official selection of the 12th annual Utah Film Festival were a loyal housewife becomes increasingly suspicious when her husband begins to go missing every Tuesday.
What was the inspiration to make See You Next Tuesday?
It started with Jacque Hinks, who threw this idea at me about a husband who left work early every Tuesday unbeknownst to his wife. His wife (Kim Stone) ends up becoming increasingly suspicious and finally follows him to catch him. We talked about doing it for a while, and I finally called him and said “We’re doing this!” So, I whipped out my laptop and started writing the script, and we bounced ideas off of one another. Jacques has a lot of really great ideas! I loved putting easter eggs in the film that Zepstone is known for. The truth of the matter is, I wanted comedy. The world has enough drama in it. I wanted people to escape and get in a good laugh. We all have to laugh once in a while.
From idea to completion, how did this production change?
Well, we all know things change once the red light is on… to the editing bay at the end. But, honestly everything that was written was pretty much was on the screen. Lucas did an amazing editing the slurping scene! Also, the original scene where Leslee (Kim Stone) (when she is in the car) was supposed to be in the middle of summer, and she passes out from heat exhaustion. But we ended up filming in October, and the forecast called for rain. So the night before filming, I had to think fast… “She knocks herself out hitting her head on the steering wheel while having a freak out” was the winner. We shot the majority of the film in 2 days with a couple of hours on a pick up day. The team of people that helped put this together are hands down the best and so incredible, I’m so happy to have had them on this project.
What was the biggest challenge in getting See You Next Tuesday made?
Gathering as many “Burly Bros” as possible for this shoot. It’s always a challenge to rally people together with so many different schedules when some of them have never been on a film set before. But once we all got together, everyone on set gelled and had an amazing time! I think the biggest challenge is the “hurry up and wait” process. And post-production is just as nerve-wracking as filming, too. So, the biggest challenge was myself staying calm.
What do you think is the most important takeaway from See You Next Tuesday?
If you’re going to surprise someone, make sure it ‘s not a fiery, passionate redhead!
But honestly, stick to your guns, stay focused, keep the communication with your team. Have fun on set and FINISH THE PROJECT! Do whatever it takes to complete your dream – that’s what sets people above the rest – and never settle. Make sure you produce quality. You don’t have to have a large budget to make sure what you’re creating is quality. You make the best of what you got, and don’t settle for less. That’s what will take you to the next level. If you believe in yourself, people will believe in you!
If you could have a do over with your film is there anything that you would do differently? If so, what would that be?
The only thing I would change is adding those other scenes I couldn’t get in time. But honestly, don’t we all wish that was the case? I’m really happy with how this film turned out, and I’m really happy it’s made people laugh!
What do you have next in the works?
That’s a big question. I am writing a grindhouse style film, a comedy horror film. Stay tuned for that. The Witch of Wander Lane is in pre-production. I’m working on another comedy with my friends from high school. But the biggest thing that I’m really excited about is Zepstone Film Awards. We are so excited to see other’s passion come to life.
