Exploring Toxic Relationships in ‘Where Flowers Won’t Grow
Sometimes a story is born out of personal struggles and the courage to face them. “Where Flowers Won’t Grow,” a short film that explores the delicate balance between staying in a toxic marriage or embracing the uncertainty of solitude, is not just a cinematic endeavor but a journey inspired by raw, personal experiences.
Rylee Jensen, the creator and lead actor of the film, shared the origins of the story. “I had the idea for ‘Where Flowers Won’t Grow’ almost 2 years ago. I intentionally was too scared to take the leap and actually write the script.” However, fate had other plans. While helping Louis Boakye with an audition, Rylee felt a compelling urge to pitch him the script. Louis embraced the idea wholeheartedly, swiftly assembling a passionate crew that believed in bringing this story to life. Rylee reflects on the collaborative effort, saying, “I was just so grateful to work with some of the most creative, kind, and talented people.”
The plot of the film draws from Rylee’s own struggles during a time when she felt “alone and empty,” emphasizing the importance of self-love before loving others. The intention is clear – to resonate with those who have faced or are navigating similar situations, offering them a sense of validation and companionship.
Reflecting on the production, Rylee highlights the people involved as the standout element. Working with director Jennica Anusua was a blessing, and the entire crew’s passion for telling this story left a lasting impact. Louis Boakye, who plays a significant role in the film, shares his favorite part: “getting synced with my scene partner to develop the chemistry we needed to make our performance right for the scene.”
Of course, no production is without its challenges. Rylee humorously mentions an unexpected obstacle: “Teo Santos will tell you it was my car windows (whoops) a few years back some sprinklers hit my car and left some awful watermarks.” A reminder that even the most creative endeavors have their share of unexpected moments.
When asked about what they would do differently if given the chance to go back in time, Rylee emphasizes the importance of growth as an actor, stating, “we are constantly growing and we’ll never stop growing.” Louis expresses a common sentiment among actors – the feeling that there’s always more to give, more to explore within a scene.
For aspiring individuals looking to step into the production space, Rylee’s advice is simple yet profound: “Just do it! Start meeting people that are doing what you want to do. Get in those rooms, make friends, and create your own work!”
As for future projects, Louis Boakye invites enthusiasts to follow their Instagram page (@salt_pepperstudios) and YouTube, where a mini-series is unfolding. They welcome everyone, actors and crew alike, to join in the creative journey.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Rylee Jensen, Louis Boakye, Jennica Anusua, and Teo Santos. The crew, a dedicated group of individuals, contributed their skills to bring this story to life.”Where Flowers Won’t Grow,” has been selected for the Utah International Film Festival, taking place from February 12-17.
