While most of the films submitted to the Utah International Film Festival come from the United States, we’ve seen a steady and exciting increase in international submissions. Filmmakers from the UK, Spain, Australia, Japan, India, and beyond are finding their way to UIFF—and many of them are seeing real benefits from being part of the festival.

Selection builds credibility beyond borders

Being officially selected by a U.S.-based festival like the Utah International Film Festival adds a layer of credibility that travels well internationally. Even if a filmmaker can’t attend in person, the selection itself becomes a powerful signal to press outlets, other festivals, and potential collaborators that the work is gaining traction beyond its home country.

One of the most exciting things we’ve seen is how recognition at UIFF translates internationally. A great example is Decode Me, directed by Sharon Sibyl Gatt. After winning at UIFF, the win generated multiple press clippings in Malta and the UK. That visibility helped elevate Sharon’s profile and reinforced her as a filmmaker worth paying attention to—not just locally, but internationally.

While it’s always great when international filmmakers are able to attend the festival in person, attendance isn’t required to see value. Many filmmakers build buzz simply through selection announcements, award wins, and social media coverage. Those touchpoints still travel far and can be leveraged in press kits, grant applications, and future festival submissions.

UIFF audiences are engaged and vocal

UIFF audiences are curious, supportive, and genuinely interested in discovering films from outside the U.S. International films often stand out in programming blocks because they bring new perspectives, storytelling styles, and cultural textures. That attention can lead to stronger audience reactions and more meaningful conversations around the film.

Awards and laurels open more doors

Festival wins—especially at international festivals—tend to stack. A laurel from UIFF can strengthen submissions to other festivals, help with funding conversations, and make press outreach more effective. Programmers notice when a film resonates outside its country of origin.

Direct communication and collaboration

Unlike very large festivals, UIFF’s scale allows for real communication with filmmakers. International filmmakers who reach out often find opportunities to collaborate on promotion, virtual participation, and press outreach. That level of accessibility can make a meaningful difference during a festival run.

You don’t need to premiere at the biggest festival in the world to make an impact internationally. Strategic selections, engaged audiences, and visible wins can carry just as much weight—sometimes more. For international filmmakers looking to expand their reach, build credibility, and create momentum beyond their home country, UIFF offers a welcoming and effective platform.
