Alex & The Firefly
They say the best love stories happened before the extreme craze over gadgets and social media. Well that is true! And I am not only speaking for myself because I’ve got a lovely summer romance film by John Woosley to back this up.
His wonderful short film “Alex & The Firefly” brought back exciting memories when I was younger. When life was simple and had no distractions from social media. The times when friendships were pure and tested by distance and time. When the foundation of friendship was bound by a strong gut connection and not how reliable one’s internet connection is.
There are many who experienced this childhood and will agree with me that we had the best time of our lives every summer vacation. And to those who are keen to know what it is like to have the ultimate summer experience of adventures and ”first’s” this film is my top recommendation.
Students have been anticipating the summer vacation all throughout the school year. It’s the time where you get to spend lots of time with your friends, planning exciting things to do all summer long, reconnecting with distant friends, and of course, for teenagers it is that time to experience the most unforgettable ”First’s” And for Alex, the summer of 2001 is the ultimate summer vacation he’ll remember for a long time.
The movie began with Alex getting ready to welcome his grade school best friend Lucy, who is back in town for the summer. He also sees this as an opportunity for him to re-establish their closeness and introduce her to his other best friend Zach. But he didn’t know that he is about to meet ”The Girl” he has been waiting for. Nope, I hate to break it to you, my friends it is not Lucy, it’s her friend Nina. Alex, Nina, Lucy, and Zach were having the best summer of their lives.
Opening their hearts and falling in love all seemed so easy but little did they know they are about to venture into an unknown land. A land where friendship and trust are tested, where jealousy and insecurities are magnified, and where unforgettable memories become a source of painful heartbreaks. Will this be their most unforgettable summer eve or will this be flag as the summer never to remember?
There are plenty of amazing points in this film, however I’d like to take a moment to highlight the excellent performances of the “Alex & The Firefly’” cast. Roan Ricker and Lacy Goettling, who played Alex and Nina levels up the romance factor of the movie because of their undeniable chemistry and convincing acting. Many will love with these two because they are extremely adorable on the screen. Kaylin Mally and Anthony Giordano superbly played their supporting roles as Lucy and Zach. They are a very cute couple on the big screen too if you ask me. This awesome set of actors depicted friendship and falling in love naturally. It feels like they are authenticly who they are on and off the set.
It is always delightful to see movies like this. The ones that make the effort to take us back in time and show the beauty and thrills of life without too much technology consuming us. The happiness of spending time with friends without looking at your mobile phone every now and then, as well as the treasured memories that will forever be kept in our hearts and mind and not staged in a photo. I admire the risk that this film’s very talented writer/director John Woosley took in creating this movie. He did not ride the bandwagon of teen drama clichés and social media cyber trend. Instead, he followed his heart and showed the world of the beauty that he believes.
