Spread the love

At a very young age, my fresh and developing mind was nurtured by television, and I believe many can share the same experience as I did. I grew up watching teen series that often centers on the teen dilemma, family drama, social status, and of course the popular kids and the so-called losers. Often the drama is dictated by the cliché of finding one’s spot in high school, where everyone is divided into different cliques where they belong and are accepted. However, these plots became a routine for every single show and very few gambles on highlighting the supporting groups among these famous cliques. And what I mean by supporting groups are those who give light, color, and life from the background, the cliques from ‘the clubs’. And one of them that frequently makes an impact with the story is the underrated journey of the ‘School Marching Band Club’. There were shows that I remembered attempted to bring the school marching band club into the spotlight, however, they often fell short with the story or weren’t able to sustain that core marching band club spirit throughout the tale. That is why I was extremely impressed when I have screened a pilot screenplay written by Bill Baber titled “Band Geeks”, after reading it, I was stoked and very much happy. I was like ‘Finally! It is about time that we get to see a series about our favorite band geeks in a fresh, fun, and innovative way’. Plus, Bill Baber spiced it up with some intriguing mystery, so expect that this ain’t the typical band geek story that we used to see on the television.

“Band Geeks” engages the story of Bev Allegro’s family and their love for music. Bev, a has-been superstar, is a dedicated mother who exerts an all-out effort and support for her children’s love of music and leads the school’s marching band booster organization. Together with her fraternal twins Alex and Amy, they journey on to high school ups and downs and major struggles with their musical career. But that’s not all, the revelation of the mystery by the end of this pilot episode gave me the impression that Bev and her twins aren’t only bound for a musical roller coaster ride, but also to uncover the biggest mystery of their high school life.

I am loving the excitement that this pilot screenplay offers. Right from the very beginning it already shows promise from a heart-pumping and butt-kicking one of a kind series about our favorite school marching band. The 27-page pilot was exquisitely written, very commendable structuring and the attention to details particularly with musical instruments and their purpose were spot-on impressive. I also like every character that I came by knowing in this pilot episode. The personification on each of them was superbly done; it made me anticipate for more, especially from our lead characters, it made me picture out who among Hollywood A-listers can play them. Lastly, I believe that if this screenplay gets the opportunity it deserved to be on television or web series platforms it can level up and dictate ingenuity among other series in the same genre. This is seriously good and has to be on the screen the soonest, fingers crossed!
