Do Film Festivals Really Watch Every Film?

Yes — real festivals do.

But not all festivals are the same, and that’s where a lot of filmmaker anxiety comes from.

When you submit your film you’re sending months or years of your life. So it’s fair to wonder if anyone is actually pressing play.

At the Utah International Film Festival, every film is watched by a real human. At least 3 in fact.

And that’s not unique to us — it’s how legitimate festivals operate.

How the screening process actually works

Most festivals use a multi-layered screening process.

Your film is usually watched by:

  1. A first-round screener

  2. A second (and third) reviewer and programmer

This is because programming is subjective. One person might not connect with a film that moves someone else. Multiple viewers create balance and fairness.

No single screener gets to quietly decide your fate.

What screeners are actually looking for

Screeners aren’t trying to find reasons to reject films.
They’re trying to find reasons to say yes.

They’re asking:

  • Is the story clear?

  • Does it hold attention?

  • Does it fit a festival audience?

They’re not hunting for technical mistakes or judging your budget. They’re watching the film the way an audience would.

If a film connects, it moves forward.

If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

It really is that simple.

Where the myth comes from

The rumor that “festivals don’t watch submissions” comes from two places:

  • Scam festivals that exist only to collect fees

  • And the pain of rejection

When a film doesn’t get in, it’s easy to assume no one watched it. But most of the time, what really happened is much harder to accept:

Someone watched it… and it just wasn’t the right fit.

That doesn’t mean the film is bad. It means programming is a puzzle, and not every piece belongs in every box.

Why this should give you confidence

When you submit to a real festival:

Someone hits play.
Someone watches your story.
Someone reacts.

Because every selection, every award, and every career that grows out of festivals starts the same way:

One person watched a film… and felt something.
