SUMMARY:BACKCOUNTRY FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 14th at 7PM\n\n\nThe Backcountry Film Festival is a year-round\, community program presented by Winter Wildlands Alliance that celebrates human-powered\, backcountry-inspired stories rooted in wild snowscapes\, stewardship and stoke.\n\n\nThe 19th Annual Backcountry Film Festival will be screening a collage of short documentaries and ski movies about the pursuit of objectives and ideals in the mountains\, artistic vision\, friendship\, and how the snow-sports community is adapting to a changing environment.\n\n\nWhere: 1255 Park Ave\, Park City\, UT 84060-5219\, United States\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Wasatch Mountain Institute (a portion of ticket proceeds will benefit WMI). Wine and Beer available for purchase.\n\n\nFilm Program:\nWhat If? (6 min) dir. Josh Goldsmith\nA countdown into the mind of a backcountry skier as he contemplates the delicate balance between risk and reward; confidence and apprehension.\n\n\nCON ARTIST (12 min) dir. MBG Motion Pictures\nThree female freeskiers find themselves on a transcendental journey\, crossing the lines of reality and the subconscious mind in a heist for self-identity.\n\n\nBeloved Whitebark: Stalwart Witness (6:33 min) dir. Creative Ascents Films\nHaving worked to protect whitebark pine in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem for the last 23 years\, Nancy Bockino invites you to get to know this charismatic tree in the alpine. Learn about why whitebark is important and its present perilous situation. Nurture your own connection to the alpine and its inhabitants.\n\n\n109 Below (13:42 min) dir. Stept Studios\nA tale of resilience\, grit and elite rescue volunteers going out of their way to save the lives of strangers\, 109 BELOW traces how an attempted rescue on Mount Washington in 1982 changed not only the course of two climbers’ lives – but also the lives of the rescuers who attempted to save them\, and the future of prosthetics\, forever.\n\n\nBeyond Begbie (13:36 min) dir. Zoya Lynch\nClimbing Mt Begbie is a “right of passage” for every hiker\, climber\, sledder\, and skier who chooses to make Revelstoke their home. While this peak has created an entire contemporary culture in Revelstoke\, its name and story only represent colonial history\, with no reference to the Indigenous heritage of this land. Is it the outdoor community’s responsibility to help change this?\n\n\nHave An Adventure (20 min) dir. Colby Elliot\nA human powered think piece that follows a collection of skiers as they explore familiar terrain in search of new adventure around Utah’s famous backcountry. Join John as he follows in his father’s tracks to turn new corners and explore the canyon he grew up in. Along the way John explores his father’s skiing philosophies while considering ways to nurture the rapidly changing culture of a growing ski community.\n\n\nBloom (14:20 min) dir. Kyle Hilken\nSierra Schlag navigates the world after losing her father on 9/11\, exploring her grief and identity as a Japanese-American while also finding herself under the cloak of depression. While she navigates these complexities\, Sierra finds a way to connect with her dad and heal through skiing.\n\n\nburn. // A Ski Film (11:22 min) dir. Kellen MacDonald\nThe story of how forest fires are impacting large swaths of terrain in the western United States and Canada. In the wake of the fires\, certain areas are transformed into beautiful playgrounds for skiers and snowboarders.\n\n\nRacha (10 min) dir. Andy Hardy\nThrough stunning cinematography and powerful storytelling\, this film takes you on a journey of discovery\, where the love of skiing leads to an unexpected education\, and a story that demands to be told.\n\n\nThe Redline Traverse (Short) (6:33 min) dir. Steve Seime\nJenna Kane and Greg Cunningham take on the Redline Traverse\, the tallest and longest ski tour in the Sierra Nevada. They pay tribute to the pioneers of the route\, the spirit of the tour and\, of course\, ski.

SUMMARY:FilmQuest
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 10th annual FilmQuest Festival! \nGaining rave reviews as one of the very best festivals in the country\, genre or otherwise\, for its quality of selections\, great events\, bevy of attending filmmakers\, the highly coveted and prestigious Cthulhu Trophy\, FilmQuest celebrates the majesty and might of genre filmmaking in the realms of fantasy\, horror\, sci-fi\, and the beyond (including action\, thriller\, western\, kung-fu\, and more). The 2023 season will continue this great tradition of celebrating the world’s greatest genre filmmaking in our beautiful home of Utah. \nFilmQuest has been designed specifically to cater to the empowerment of the filmmaker through various events\, awards\, swag\, connections\, and more. SUMMARY:Utah Film Market
DESCRIPTION:The international Utah Film Market was born as a media center marketplace for international film in St. George Utah with extra screenings as a “Red Film Market” in 2010 season of the Annual Red Rock Film Festival.\nNOTE: If you already entered into the Red Rock Film Festival\, you automatically are entered into the Utah (Red) Film Market. Do not enter twice.\nThe Market is held during the Festival in the fall. The purpose for the Market is to show and catalog a broader selection of films\, mostly out of competition\, asking which films should be shown before an audience.\nIt considers mostly features out of competition as well as entries of all genres from shorts to full-length features held in Southern Utah. Within a 45 min. drive is the main entrance to Zion National Park its sister Festival in the Fall\, Brian Head Ski Resort\, dry desert\, sheep herders\, ranches\, red mountains\, green mountains\, and UFO sightings. The location is ideal for the vacation-seeking film buyer and location scouts. It is an artist’s retreat for film\, cuisine\, parties\, and workshops with approachable professional people. \nMISSION & OBJECTIVE\nIts main focus is to encourage the production of media in both the independent and professional market that portray the human race in a positive light\, and to applaud original works that redefine media through innovation\, creativity and sensitivity that both enlightens and educates audiences from around the world. \nABOUT THE FESTIVAL & MARKET\nThe Utah Film Market was a small section from the Festival and now is held at a separate time where distributors\, filmmakers and other industry professionals can view films in private or public screening and on their own in the festival library live or virtually. There are also in special industry screenings given to select finalists and other favorites from the main festival.\nThe International Red Rock Film Festival\, was formed in 2007 in Southern Utah\, adding the Market in 2010 and quickly became a internationally recognized festival with award-winning judges and rigorous pre-selection process. It made MovieMaker Magazine’s list of “Top Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” in both 2009 and 2013. \nDEMOCRATIC FILM SELECTION\nAll films are watched by members of our previewing committee and scored in Directing\, Screenplay\, Acting/Talent\, Production Values and Post-Production Values. Local or international\, friend or stranger\, pretty or funky\, famous or not: all films are given equal treatment and go through the same democratic film selection. \nDEMOGRAPHIC\nThe demographic is well educated\, consisting mostly of empty-nesters\, college students and seniors. The festival also aims to find new films for seniors as well as quality films for youth\, sports films and films with a message. \nGENRE\nAll genres are considered. Although documentaries have been a predominate focus at the Red Rock Film Festival\, festival audience often compliment the variety and diversity of films selected for the festival in Utah. Animation\, arts\, children\, comedy\, documentary\, drama\, experimental\, fiction\, narrative\, romance\, sports\, student\, horror\, suspense\, mystery\, musical\, music videos\, war themes\, women’s issues\, family\, and humanitarian films are all taken into consideration. Cultural diversity is also a highlight at the festival; American\, Indian\, African\, Islander\, European\, Asian\, Latino\, Buddhist\, Christian\, Muslim\, Spiritual\, Yogi\, Hindu\, and other philosophical\, governmental\, historical\, and artistic cultures are to be explored. \nOUT OF COMPETITION INDUSTRY SCREENINGS\nAll genres are considered including animation\, documentary\, experimental\, fiction\, music videos\, dance and fashion films for industry to showcase to the film buyer. \nRED GRID COMPETITION\nThe Market has a competition for both shorts and features for Best Hook\, that idea and moment in the film that grabs the viewer into the story.\nThe Program Directors may also select additional categories at their own discretion\, depending on how many qualified entries are received. \nALL FILM DESERVES A HOME\nIt’s all about how much we like a film and where do we place them? We just want good\, original film that showcases our mission. We expect some films would be great to release to the theaters\, others for television\, some for the classroom\, for our film series\, or a great premiere. To encourage the independent spirit\, the team behind Red Rock and the Market strives to find a home for all films that qualify in competition. This gives the filmmaker a chance to give their work exposure even if they may not make the festival finals. The festival also hosts this market\, special screenings throughout the year plus we make recommendations to other festivals.
