Now playing at Open Cinema
In the heart of American Fork, Maven Cinema is turning into a haven for local filmmakers as the much-anticipated “Open Cinema” event unfolds on the evening of December 5th. Drawing inspiration from the famed concept of “Open Mic Night,” this unique initiative provides a stage for aspiring directors and producers to showcase their creative endeavors on the expansive silver screen.
As a collaborative effort between Maven Cinemas and the Utah International Film Festival, “Open Cinema” brings together a diverse range of talents from across the region. Filmmakers, armed with a nominal entry fee of $5, seize the opportunity to present an array of projects, spanning music videos, short films, movie trailers, and comedy sketches.
The highlight of the evening is the premiere of the eagerly anticipated movie trailer for “The Wedding Party.” Directed by Kyle Larsen of District 22, the film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Ishca Bee, Amelia Joan Bowles, Erik K Larsen, James Rudd, Bill Gilane, Teren Turner, Chase Elwood, Wesley L Austin, Michael Solarez, and many more. Larsen, is knows for his work as the director on the ‘Cohabitation’ series and as the producer of ‘The Faculty,’ series as well.
Adding to the cinematic event are seven short films:
- “Payday” – Directed by John Cheney, the film follows his previous works, including ‘Sirin’ (2020) and ‘Iron Curtain’ (2007).
- “The Plan” – Directed by Kyle Larsen, the film stars Ischa Bee, James Rudd, Teren Turner, and Kayli Brummer.
- “The Time Machine” – Directed by Ebrahim Ghaeini, the short film transports the audience through memories and time, exploring the unique bond between the Time Traveler and Weena, an enigmatic Eloi.
- “My Love Letter to Jazz” – A short documentary from directed by Isabella Reed that delves into the common love of jazz music shared between a young woman and her parents.
- “Replay” – Directed by Devin Squire, the film centers on a man attempting to alter the course of events and prevent the murder of his wife by journeying back in time.
- “Highway” – Under the direction of Douglas Cunningham, this film follows Amanda, a former Army Ranger, seeking revenge and navigating mysterious roads, starring Lindsey Hawkes and Cherie Julander.
- “Picturesque” – Written and directed by award winner Robert Salisbury, Picturesque stars Gloria Salisbury, Kaily Jacob’s, and Robert Salisbury.
The atmosphere at Maven Cinema is buzzing with excitement. Warren Workman of the UIFF was quoted saying “Open Cinema celebrates the vibrant filmmaking community we have here in Utah. It’s a testament to the creativity and talent of our local filmmakers. We are thrilled to provide this platform for them to shine.”
Maven Cinema, nestled at 120 W Main St, American Fork, UT 84003, stands as Utah’s only Retro/Indie theater. The venue’s commitment to showcasing classic films and anthologies such as the Star Wars films I-VI in December. The collaboration between Maven Cinemas and UIFF perfectly aligns with the mission of “Open Cinema” – fostering creativity and community engagement.
