Princess Eun Hwa
“Princess Eun Hwa” is the complicated story of a young princess in ancient Korea living a life of duality—in her fantasies she falls in love with many princes from different kingdoms, but her reality is a lot more difficult, heart wrenching, and tragic. It is both a dark fairy tale and a story that will touch your life.
It’s a symbolic account with metaphors and reflections on Stockholm syndrome. The tragic life of Princess Eun Hwa is one for the ages. Dave Zhang brought to life a drama and romance that will impact the viewer on a deep level of consciousness.
The Princess lives in a confusing state of existence. Her fantasies and realities blend together. Her life unfolds slowly. She is concerned about her uncle, she enjoys chess, she has servants, and she has to be watched after by other people. Even though she is surrounded by people who care about her, she is concerned chiefly about her one and only uncle. She is so concerned with her uncle at one point that the general who stayed behind to watch over her decides to take her to find their lord, her uncle. What unfolds is a daring attempt to escape the palace and its surroundings. The question is, if she is escaping from reality or fantasy.
Each time her uncle leaves, Princess Eun Hwa wants to go after him, leaving behind what seems like a lovely existence. She fears being alone. Each time there is a potential lover to take her where she wants to go. She is never able to find her uncle until the very end. It’s hard to say if she can’t find him because she doesn’t actually want to or if he doesn’t want to be found. Her mind wanders, mixing her emotional state with her actual physical situation. Perhaps she is on a journey to find her innocence and inner peace.
The short film is a beautiful interpretation of ancient Korea and its customs. The costumes are absolutely gorgeous. The sets are so beautiful. It’s so beautiful to see the princess live in different types of fairy tales and time-periods. It’s obvious that she is cursed, but who put the curse on her and what the curse means is up for debate. The princess is very obedient and graceful. The uncle is kind and stern, with an arrogant way of taking care of his niece.
“Princess Eun Hwa” is a beautiful collaborative project brought together by Dave Zhang as the director and writer, Wang Jing as the producer, Lee Song Lee as the beautiful Princess, Seong Hun as the overbearing Uncle, Min He original music composer and Tianyu Guo as the editor.
