Shannon Ryan-Angel – The Real Moms
We had the opportunity to interview Shannon Ryan-Angel, the filmmaker behind The Real Moms. The Real Moms is an official selection of the 12th annual Utah Film Festival.
What was the inspiration to make The Real Moms?
We were inspired to make The Real Moms during COVID. Things were slow in the industry, and we wanted to create! So I started writing this lighthearted comedy poking fun at different types of mom personas. Once I started putting ideas down on paper, they just flowed together and came alive!
From idea to completion, how did this production change?
The process of creating this short film was fairly quick, and honestly, there weren’t a ton of changes. So many amazing women wanted to help make this come to life, so I ended up writing in some extra parts. So that was probably the biggest change.
What was the biggest challenge in getting The Real Moms made?
The biggest challenge was getting this ensemble cast of women and our crew all in the same place at the same time to film in one day! The size of the cast also made for some intense scene blocking.
What do you think is the most important takeaway from your film?
Being a mom is the most challenging job in the world. And when you become one, the experience changes you. It can be an emotional rollercoaster! There are times when you worry so much about your kids, and there are days when you feel like a flaming hot mess. Or you’re going through a phase where you must keep up with appearances and be the perfect mom. Or sometimes, you need to be the family cheerleader and always have a smile on your face. These characters represent that in an over-the-top way. It’s a good reminder to embrace those mom quirks that we all have.
If you could have a do over with The Real Moms, is there anything that you would do differently? If so, what would that be?
I love how this film came out, so I wouldn’t change a thing! The cast was perfect and it was so fun to make.
What do you have next in the works?
I”m working on another script that is an inspirational dramedy. It’s also inspired by the challenges that moms experience. It’s a topic that is near and dear to my heart!
How can we learn more about you and your projects?
