Solitude and Struggle in “Another”
“Another,” a psychological thriller, takes audiences on a gripping journey through Lilah’s internal battles with mental health, portraying the struggle of surviving when the threats come from both within and without.
Lane Russell, the Director and Producer of “Another,” shares the origins of the story, stating, “The story of Another originated as a way to discuss mental health issues in a subtle, but meaningful way. We wanted to create a story that externalized and visualized the internal battle of someone struggling with their mental health.”
The film explores the dynamics of isolation and self-discovery. Russell reflects on the production, highlighting the camaraderie formed during the filming process. “My favorite part of production was spending an entire week together as a skeleton crew. We all stayed at the cabin together during filming and had such an amazing time hanging out together every day, having fun, and creating something together.”
Making movies is not easy. Russell acknowledges the difficulties faced by the nimble crew, especially in terms of lighting. “The most difficult part about production was how nimble we had to be with everything. Lighting was particularly difficult, especially since we only had a single person handling all lighting.”
Looking back Russell shares a valuable lesson for aspiring filmmakers. “For those interested in getting into production, my advice is to go out and make something just like we did. Don’t worry about the results of whatever you create because you can’t control that. Simply go out and create, learn from it, then do it again. Those are the things in your control.”
If there’s one thing Russell would change if given the chance to go back it time it would be: “The only thing I would change would be to make the script more of a self-contained short film.”
