Life can be full of surprises. Sometimes you just wouldn’t know what will hit you or who will bump into in your life. And often, these ‘unexpected’ circumstances and individuals opens our life to an extent we never have imagined. Are these mere coincidence? Or are we products of our own doings? Do we invite these situations and people to our life, or is it really how our life’s track has been written? Maybe these circumstances decide on how our fate should be drawn. Life is challenging and can be a little less complicated if we don’t stick our noses on things we shouldn’t have. That may be the realization of our lead character named Kim Hyungwoo in this feature film titled “Spy-Type Mode” by Kim Young Il.
The setting of this feature film is located in the amazing country of South Korea. Director Kim Young Il who is also the writer and producer of this movie gives a very interesting take on a sci-fi story that involves people with special abilities. I didn’t read the synopsis of the film before watching it, that is why to my surprise it took me to another definition of how a sci-fi story is delivered. This film did not have many visual effects, but it made me felt that there is seriously uncanny that is about to happen.
It all began with Hyungwoo, a simple young man. The average kind of guy that usually blends in the crowd and wouldn’t get noticed. Nothing special with his looks nor interesting about his presence. However, one day he decided to do something out of the ordinary that led him to be entangled with strangers who will introduce him to his true self. Did they decide his life for him or is he destined to be who they thought he’d be? Find out how Kim Hyungwoo’s simple and uncomplicated life is about to get interesting, challenging, and a bit on the edge of the cliff as we go on and uncover this thriller sci-fi by Kim Young Il.
The story started when Hyungwoo found a wallet and decided to follow the person who lost it. But instead of moving on after returning the wallet, something triggered in him to know more about this man and the ‘organization he seems to be in. As he followed him, he bumped into crazy situations, and to a girl that even got him deeper to something he shouldn’t be into. She helped him learned more about himself than he could ever do on his own. But one thing led to the other and got him caught in an incriminating situation that will open his eyes to his true abilities and the truth behind these strangers.
I enjoyed watching this film. It is something I don’t see every day, a story that knocks to a person’s curiosity, and I liked it. The movie also has a concrete story line and interesting characters. And for a first-time filmmaker in the feature category, he nailed it really well!
