Step Into a Survivor’s Journey with ‘I’ll Never Forget’
We recently had an exclusive interview with Tara Berrett, the writer of the short screenplay “I’ll Never Forget.” The story is the emotional evolution of Steph and the inspiration and challenges she faces.
The screenplay’s origins can be traced back four years when Tara and her husband found inspiration in Coldplay’s song “Believe” during a poignant moment after her father-in-law’s funeral. The emotional impact of the song led Tara to craft a powerful monologue about salvation. Over the years, this monologue evolved into a compelling short screenplay exploring the theme of survivor’s guilt.
Berrett revealed that the character of Steph underwent significant transformation during the refining process. Initially conceived as bitter and less compassionate, Steph’s layers were deepened to explore her healing process and the quest for closure after being rescued by a heroic figure.
For Tara, the entire screenwriting process felt like a challenge, with a particular focus on making smooth transitions between scenes.
“I am the type of person that once I get an idea in my head, I go full force and become consumed with writing a piece until it’s all down on paper—or on my laptop” said Berrett. “Then, after all my ideas are spilled out— I will go back and slowly start with the re-writing and refining of the piece.”
Yet, she embraces the philosophy that there is “no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting,” emphasizing the importance of revisiting and refining her work.
The most enjoyable aspect of the screenwriting craft, according to Berrett, is the development of characters. “I like saying dialogue out loud while I’m having the characters converse with one another.” She delights in bringing characters to life by crafting their backstories and even envisioning their living spaces.
“I’ll Never Forget” is more than just a screenplay for Berrett; it’s a story she feels deeply connected to. While it is a work of fiction, she hopes it inspires others to reconcile with old hurts and grievances. Berrett welcomes filmmakers and producers interested in her work to reach out and collaborate. She plans to act as the main character when the short is produced later this year.
As for future stories, Tara Berrett has a wealth of experiences to share. One of her recent creations, a satirical scene titled “Books ‘R’ Us,” offers a humorous take on a Kardashian-wannabe navigating the world of part-time employment at a bookstore. Berrett envisions turning it into a series, drawing from her years of experience in retail management.
“I’ll Never Forget” has been selected as an official entry in the Utah International Film Festival, taking place from February 12-17.
