The Purple Glasses: A Nostalgic Journey Back to 80s Middle School Friendship

“The Purple Glasses,” a film crafted from the memories of director Susan Sullivan, brings to life the essence of middle school camaraderie and the unexpected twists of fate.

“My story originated back in the late 80’s at Suffern Junior High School… based on the true story of how by chance I met my best friend in middle school” Sullivan reminisces.

The magic of the film is in the story and  in its meticulous recreation of the 80s era. From the vibrant visuals meticulously curated by Director of Photography Luke Miller to the authentic costume designs by Annalisa Adams, every detail breathes life into the past. Filmed at Torrance High School in California, renowned for its timeless architecture, the production team found the perfect backdrop to encapsulate the essence of the era.

Every production has its fair share of challenges and “The Purple Glasses ” was not exempt. Sullivan recounts a specific challenge, “Making sure that we had enough kids to fill the halls and classrooms and that they all had their work permits… For authenticity purposes, it was important to us to have the kids be around the age that they were playing.”

Despite hurdles like a sudden fire alarm disrupting filming, the team persevered and the final result was an enchanting story of friendship.

Reflecting on lessons learned, Sullivan shares, “I would have started working with a Composer earlier… Fortunately, we had an amazing Composer, Katy Pfaffl, who created a great score right out of the 80s.”

For aspiring filmmakers, Sullivan offers great advice, urging them to experiment, start small, and surround themselves with a supportive crew. “Have a strong Producer that will have your back… Network and start building a crew that will support you.”
