Unlock Your Film’s Potential: A Data-Driven Look at the Utah International Film Festival Selections

Filmmakers, are you ready to get your masterpiece seen by larger audiences at film festivals? The Utah International Film Festival (UIFF) is passionate about showcasing diverse, compelling, and innovative cinema from around the globe. We know the festival circuit can feel like a puzzle, so we’re pulling back the curtain and sharing some insights from our past submission and selection trends.

This isn’t about fitting into a rigid box, but about understanding the landscape so you can best position your film for success!

Finding the Sweet Spot: Film Length Insights

Does length matter? When it comes to film festival selections, it can certainly play a role in programming. Let’s see what the numbers tell us about runtimes at UIFF:

Shorts Dominate UIFF: Our data reveals how much our audiences and programmers LOVE short films!

  • Films 0-5 minutes long make up 11.38% of submissions but a significant 15.62% of selections, boasting an impressive 24.78% selection rate for films in this category. If you’ve got a punchy, concise story, we want to see it!
  • The 11-15 minute category is a powerhouse, representing 19.35% of submissions and a crazy 24.11% of our final selections, with a strong 22.51% selection rate.
  • Similarly, films 6-10 minutes (18.08% of selections, 21.02% selection rate) and 21-25 minutes (9.32% of selections, 21.94% selection rate) also see excellent representation and strong chances of selection.

Mid-Length and Features

  • While shorter films see high selection rates, we absolutely program and celebrate films of all lengths up to 2 hours. For instance, films 61-75 minutes have a solid 16.13% selection rate, and even features in the 110-120 minute range see a 17.02% selection rate.
  • What this tells us is that while there’s a lot of love for shorts, longer films that truly captivate and justify their runtime absolutely find a place in our festival. The key is a compelling narrative, whatever the length.

Don’t artificially shorten or lengthen your film! Tell your story in the time it needs. However, if you have a powerful short, know that UIFF is a fantastic venue with a proven track record of programming a significant volume of short-form content with excellent selection odds.

Genre Trends: What Stories Are Resonating?

Every genre has its standouts, and UIFF is committed to a diverse slate. Here’s a peek at genre submission and selection trends:

Dramas Dominate: Dramas are clearly a festival favorite, making up 17.86% of submissions but a whopping 32.86% of selected films. Even more impressively, 42.42% of submitted Dramas are selected! If you have a powerful human story, UIFF is an eager audience.

Thrill & Imagination are Fan Favorites:

  • Horror fans, rejoice! 9.52% of submissions are Horror, translating to 12.68% of selections, with a fantastic 30.68% selection rate.
  • Fantasy films also enchant our programmers, with a 34.09% selection rate.
  • Sci-Fi continues to capture imaginations, with 8.44% of submissions turning into 9.39% of selections and a strong 25.64% selection rate.

Strong Showings:

  • Action/Adventure films have a robust 24.39% selection rate.
  • Nature documentaries/films also do very well, with a 30.00% selection rate from a smaller pool of submissions.
  • Comedy is highly submitted (21.00%) and makes up a good chunk of our program (14.55% of selections), with a respectable 15.98% selection rate. Your laughs are welcome!

Niche & Challenge Genres:

  • Genres like Biographical (2.78% sel. rate), Mystery (5.56% sel. rate), and Thriller (9.88% sel. rate) are more competitive, meaning your film in these categories needs to be exceptionally compelling to stand out.
  • Historically, War films have had a 0% selection rate from the 1.08% submitted. This doesn’t mean we’d never program one, but it indicates it’s a particularly challenging genre to break through with at UIFF based on past trends.

While Drama, Horror, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi show particularly high selection rates, quality filmmaking in any genre has a chance. If your film is in a more competitive genre, focus on making it the most unique, well-crafted, and engaging version it can be. We’re always looking for those hidden gems!

Your STORY Matters Most

While these numbers offer fascinating insights into past trends, they are not hard and fast indicators if your film will or won’t be selected. The most important factors are always the quality of your filmmaking, the power of your story, and the unique voice you bring.

The Utah International Film Festival is discovering and promoting talented filmmakers like you. We see these statistics not as limitations, but as an encouraging sign:

  • There’s a strong chance for well-made short films.

  • Powerful dramas and imaginative genre pieces (Horror, Fantasy, Sci-Fi) are highly sought after.

  • Even in competitive categories, exceptional films can and do get selected.

We believe your film has potential. Use these insights to understand the landscape, but most importantly, be true to your vision. We’re excited to see the incredible stories you’ve been working on.
