Banshee

Have you already figured out your purpose in life? That calling that ignites your whole being to do something whole-heartedly and passionately? If not yet, today’s focus short film titled “Banshee” by Sam Casscells will make you experience such. It is a story that had me witness a supernatural awakening, wherein a young lady dreamt of an extraordinary experience of being called by the winds and the sea. This strong inkling of her being was like a strong force pulling her in the direction of her true purpose.

Banshee surprised me with its incredibly beautiful cinematography. It was pristine as the sunlight on the beach. It was very pleasing to the eyes, thus giving an enjoyable and memorable screening experience. Aside from its cinematography, there are two more factors that made me love this short film, first is Lillian Casscells’ performance and the second is the climax which gave focus on an impressive shot of her coming out of the sea. Our lead, Lillian Casscells, played an unconventional role of a young lady with a distinct calling. She dances gracefully in a form of ballet in front of a lighthouse. It was like she was swaying along with the winds and waves of the sea. And Lillian Casscells’ performance was captivating. Her natural flow and serene execution gave me an impressive first impression of the film. It made me anticipate that I was bound to watch a movie that is able to translate the story with no words but with profound actions. A story that doesn’t need much explanation, but speaks from every angle and gestures. And it didn’t fail me, Banshee delivered me that kind of storytelling. It was magnifying and beautiful, and I loved every second I was watching it. Second, was the story’s climax. Where Lillian Casscells’ character was called upon by the sea. She walks right through the currents of the sea, submerging herself in the water. Then an incredible moment was captured. Lillian Casscells ascends from the sea, and it was such a beautiful moment. The timing was perfect and the lighting was divine. It was an exceptional cinematic experience. The great thing about it was it didn’t only highlight the technical excellence of the film, but also how it links the character of Lillian Casscells of being rejuvenated or reborn to her true purpose magically and unforgettably. I may have said that two additional factors made it stand out for me, however, there is one more. I super love the ending. It was uncanny, hairraising, and definitely not the ending I was anticipating, and I love it. It gave a very strange feeling, something almost horror-like, and it was so good. Watching it was like seeing the exchange of time and years being interpreted uniquely.

Sam Casscells indeed showcased an impressive experimental short film. His talent in directing, writing, and composing was manifested in this movie. It was out of the ordinary and was able to convey a strong story. From technical aspects, performances, musical composition, and storytelling, Banshee is a true standout.
