Crafting Comedy of Teachers Lives
In the heart of Orchard High School a new series has begun drawing inspiration from the real-life experiences of two teachers, Chandler Austin and Heather Larsen. The creation of their online comedy series, aptly named “The Faculty,” traces back to the camaraderie forged during their days as colleagues.
Chandler and Heather, both educators with a penchant for humor, began jotting down the daily trials and tribulations faced by teachers. The result? A show that artfully captures the entertaining chaos of teachers’ lives from their unique perspective.
“Heather and I taught school together and started writing down ideas for a show based on things that happened day to day” said Austin. “The real issues and problems that occur in teachers’ everyday lives can be quite entertaining when told through the teacher’s perspective. We talked about the idea for a long time and finally decided to make it happen! And we’re really glad we did.”
As the project gained momentum, Chandler Austin reflects on the joy of seeing their narrative come to life. The long hours invested in crafting the story finally manifested in a surreal experience for the duo. Working alongside a cast and crew that radiated positivity and enthusiasm, Chandler expresses gratitude, asserting there isn’t a single person they wouldn’t collaborate with again.
Yet, every production has its challenges, and for Chandler and Heather, navigating locations and finding the perfect actors to embody their characters proved to be the most formidable. Drawing inspiration from real people around them at work, casting for these specific roles posed a unique challenge. However, their luck held, and they found a talented ensemble to bring their characters to life.
Reflecting on the filmmaking process, Chandler contemplates what they might have done differently. Still actively engaged in teaching, the duo finds daily inspiration for the show.
“It would be amazing to be able to reshoot and incorporate those ideas, as well as include some other characters that we didn’t have a chance to introduce.”
For aspiring creators venturing into the production space, Chandler Austin imparts valuable advice. “It all starts with an idea,” he insists. The duo, having never undertaken such a project before, took it step by step. Over a year was dedicated to refining the script through table reads and consultations with other writers. Chandler emphasizes the importance of partnerships, highlighting how working with Heather provided double the contacts and was crucial to their success.
