Polygamy Gone Wrong
Throughout history, women had endured subjugation and inferiority. Often, a woman’s femininity, vulnerability, and devotion are mistaken as a weakness. She is taken advantage of in many ways and abused in different forms. Today’s short film is not for the faint heart. Utah’s own Dr. Alicia Oberle Farmer took me to a polygamous horror fantasy setting where it had me witnessed the vilest form of this act. Her short film “Polygamy Gone Wrong” bravely recreates a power-driven co-habitual life of a polygamist and his wives. This fantasy horror-suspense short film will explicitly show you how justice should be served to this crime.
Dr. Alicia Oberle Farmer’s short film Polygamy Gone Wrong will stir intrigues to the depths of your mind the way it did to mine. It gave me the initial impression of a happy haven, where women are harmoniously living together. A group of women that exudes a happy life in an environment of love and positivity. A life of what seems to have not a care in the world but adoration, respect, and care for one another as sisters. But all slowly darkens as a man makes his presence felt in this happy haven. A day of what seems to be a glorious time of enjoying each other’s company with beautiful smiles, merry songs, and pleasant conversations turned into an awkward silence filled with the deafening noise of fear and terror. Tension and dread penetrated every woman in the room. Faces that were once covered with pure smiles suddenly shifted to anxiety, fearing for the other. This man is their husband, a polygamous man taking advantage of the vulnerability and devotion of his woman. An autocrat that feeds on the fear and meekness of his wives. Instigating his power without concern or respect for the being of the women he calls his wife. How long can these women endure their predator? Or will they ever get out of this situation? That is the climax you have to find out for yourself. And I guarantee you that never have I ever seen justice to this kind of situation the way Dr. Alicia Oberle Farmer did in this film.
I’d like to give high commendation to Dr. Alicia Oberle Farmer for not only directing and also creating the story of this movie but primarily for the courage of taking on such a sensitive and scandalous story of polygamy. She again exhibits her distinct eye and talent for storytelling and filmmaking following the success of her award-winning feature film the City of Salt. This movie sets the standard high in the short film narrative category by delivering an intriguing and tasteful fantasy horror film that is also emotionally engaging. Plus the cinematic experience and cast performance were explicitly impressive given that it had a limited budget of below $500. Indeed Dr. Alicia Oberle Farmer was able to showcase her edge, ingenuity, and versatility in filmmaking and clear claim as one of Utah’s top local multi-talented directors and including Polygamy Gone Wrong in the list of her impressive and award-worthy creations!
