We had the opportunity to interview Jamie Tran the writer, co-director & executive producer of the short film Iris. Iris is an official selection in the 12th annual Utah Film Festival.

Iris is about a Vietnamese-American teenager must choose between pursuing her dreams and honoring the cultural traditions of her strict father until she learns something about her mother’s past.

What was the inspiration to make Iris?

Hoping to inspire young generation to have the courage to follow their hearts especially in the arts!  Also, for some older generation who may have some regrets they didn’t or wasn’t allow to follow their passion and possible as, parents or grandparents to allow their loved ones to do so.  Lastly,  the relationships we have with our loved ones and forgiveness, even for oneself.

From idea to completion, how did this production change?

The initial story had a few more characters.  Due to several reasons, one was casting so the script was re-written and guess what?  I believe it changed for the better and I couldn’t be more happy about it.  Also, to present a short film that delivered the meaning and story of the film , keeping it between 10-15 min was a challenge which is the point of a “short film.”

What was the biggest challenge in getting Iris made?

The biggest challenge initially was the casting.   Of course, also working around Covid and scheduling.

What do you think is the most important takeaway from your film?

Living with regret & finding forgiveness.

If you could have a do over with Iris is there anything that you would have done differently? If so, what would you change

Yes. There were other moments of humor I would have liked to add.  Possibly Aunt Lily making fun of her brother in law of his old mentality and a shot to emphasize the size of the vitamin book.

What do you have in the works?

Completed a treatment for a new feature
